What Is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official translation of your national driving license, recognized under the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. It is only valid when presented together with your original driver’s license.

  • The 1968 IDP version is valid for up to 3 years, but no longer than your license is valid.

  • The 1949 IDP version is valid for 1 year.

It allows tourists to legally drive in many countries, including Albania.

Do You Need an IDP to Drive in Albania?

Legally: Yes. Tourists are recommended to carry an International Driving Permit along with their valid national license.

  • Most car rental companies will ask for an IDP at pick-up.

  • Police controls in rural or border areas may require it.

  • According to the Albanian Road Authority (DPSHTRR), foreign drivers should carry both their license and an IDP.
